This week PERS-41 is proud to recognize LTJG Devin Laviano from Bellport, NY.Commissioned from the Naval Academy is 2013, Devin fleeted-up from Communications Officer to Navigator and completed his second deployment onboard BULKELEY in July 2016 as part of the HARRY S TRUMAN Strike Group.Onboard BULKELEY he mentors all up and coming Officers of the Deck and runs the qualification process to include chairing the Second Tour Division Officer Murder Board, scheduling and sitting all Department Head Murder Boards and final qualification board with the CO.A constant presence on the bridge wing, he is the lead CONN Coach for all UNREP evolutions. On deployment he safely navigated 43,167 Nautical Miles transiting to and from Norfolk, VA and operating throughout the complex FIFTH and SIXTH Fleet AORs. He planned and executed 8 Strait of Hormuz transits, 8 Bab El Mandeb transits and 6 Suez Canal transits.Additionally he led the ship through challenging sea and anchor details to Duqm, Oman and Safa*ga, Egypt.Awesome work Devin - keep it up!!

This week we spotlight LT Elizabeth Spangenberg from New Orleans, LA.Commissioned through University of San Diego ROTC she and recently completed the Graduate Education Voucher (GEV) 24/12 program while assigned as an instructor at the Basic Division Officer Course (BDOC) San Diego.At sea she served as 1st Lieutenant on USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG 48) and as Navigator on USS DECATUR (DDG 73).Transitioning to shore duty, she became a Basic Division Office Course (BDOC) Instructor where she mentored and trained the prospective first tour Division Officers.Following her two years instructing at BDOC, the GEV 24/12 program allowed LT Spangenberg to study full-time at the University of San Diego, graduating with a Master's degree in the Peace and Justice program.The combination of orders to BDOC and the GEV 24/12 program allowed her to earn a Master's Degree while ensuring that hundreds of new Ensigns were set up for success on their first Division Officer Tour.Interested in teaching the next generation of Surface Warriors and getting your Master's Degree while on shore duty??Contact your detailer about what it takes to become a BDOC Instructor!!

This week PERS-41 is happy to recognize MIDN 1/C Michael Brown from the Naval Academy.MIDN Brown is an Economics major, a Varsity Basketball player and the 7th Company, Company Commander.He's wanted to be a SWO since he first arrived at the Academy. This drive only became stronger after his interactions with real Sailors in the Fleet and he strives to be "leader of character."MIDN Brown hopes to pick a Cruiser or Destroyer out of San Diego.Keep up the great work MIDN Brown - we can't wait to see you in the Fleet!

PMRI is providing 10 graduate tuition scholarships annually for officers entering in-residence graduate programs.
